Kristen felt terrible. She had been having a wonderful time with Alice while her father was here all alone. It must be her fault that her dad seemed so mad and so sad. She promised herself to do better: to never be late, to never leave her dad’s side, to pay strict attention to the rules. Kristen was afraid that if he stayed angry at her, maybe her father wouldn’t want her to come back!

After dinner, Kristen went right to the barn and to bed. She slept all that night and half the next day. What was the point of getting up, anyway. Nothing would ever be the same, and there was nothing she could do about it. When she was with her father, Kristen missed her mother, and when she was with her mother, she missed her father. Kristen got up, walked around in a couple circles, and curled back up in a ball. Soon she was asleep again.

Kristen picked up her head and opened one eye. There was Rachel, sitting on top of Rebecca, the cow.
